When you hear the following words: BEAUTY, FEATHERS, BRIGHT COLORS, BLING, SAMBA & DANCE DANCE DANCE … BIGGEST PARTY OF THE WORLD … Oh yeah, it’s RIO DE JANEIRO CARNIVAL!
It is the world most famous festival that is held before Lent every year and is the biggest carnival that has around two million people daily on the streets. Rio Carnival is a wild 5 day celebration, 40 days before Easter. It officially begins on Saturday and finishes on Fat Tuesday. It is undoubtedly the biggest carnival worldwide, and that’s why Rio was called the Carnival Capital of the world. The Carnival usually happens in February, the hottest month in the southern Hemisphere, when the Rio summer is at it’s peak.
The celebrations take place throughout the city and most of the costumed crowd at the street festival are locals. The smiley, easy-going, Happy-Happy Brazilian people, celled cariocas, take down the streets, singing, dancing, celebrating life in an unique atmosphere of unity and happiness.
SAMBA – The most famous dance in Brazil with African influences, is performed on the streets by Samba schools, or just groups of locals that want to attend the carnival parade. The flamboyant costumes are a must, including a mandatory wing of 100-strong female-only marchers that accompany the various floats during celebration.
Each school puts on their best show, costumes and dancing, in order to win the title and perform in Rio’s Carnival Winner’s Parade. On the last Sunday and Monday nights before Lent, the tickets are quickly sold out up to hundreds dollars per seat.
